Difficulty In Swallowing, Only On Fluids, Have Extreme Weakness. Cause Of Swallowing Difficulty?

My mother is 94 and in a nursing home . She has had trouble swallowing both food and drink.off and on for about a year. She hasnt had any food and only about 8 oz of liquid in4 days. She is very weak. How long can she continue this way.Why can she not swollow?

hello,please get an endoscopic examination of the throat and foodpipe to rule out cancer.if the endoscopy is normal,she may have neurological problems,or chest masses pressing on her esophagus giving rise to this problem.hope she gets well soon. dr praveen.
