Dark Painful Bruises On Legs, Nausea, Tiredness. Diabetes Test Normal. Causes?

In the past few days I have developed some very painful, dark bruises on my legs. I ve never bruised easily and I did not bang against anything. I also have felt periodically nauseous and have been very tired. I had some simple blood work done and a diabetes test, tests which came back normal. The clinic doctor advised me to go to the emergency room if the bruising continued or worsened. What are the possible causes of this odd and painful bruising

Hello,

Thanks for asking your query.

Bruise develop when small blood vessels near skin surface are broken by impact or a blow. It is often commonly seen in arms & legs. When this happen the blood leaks out of the vessel & appears as bright red ,purple or black coloured mark. It is more common in females.

There are several factors which contribute to easy bruising in old age.

The tissue supporting these vessels become weaken, the capillaries become fragile & more prone to rupture.

Thining of the skin with absence of protective fatty tissue layer making the capilaries more prone to even minor injuries.

Certain drugs such blood thinning drud can also cause bruising.

You could wait & watch if the bruising gets worse you may visit doctor again.

Wish you Good health & take care.

Hello,
There can be several reasons for the dark bruises but painful ones do need exclusion of a vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessels) like disorder.
Do you have fever (low grade), fatigue, myalgia (symptoms of a viral like infection), weight loss, and then the painful bruises? If yes, definitely a vasculitis needs to be excluded.
Viral infections like dengue virus requires exclusion if you are in India at this time.
Otherwise, a CBC, LFT, C3 C4, ANCA, ANA (screen), renal profile definitely are mandatory tests at this point in time.
Please get in touch if you have any further queries.
Thanks.
