Could The Ropey Ear Structure And The Swollen Lymph Nodes Be Related?

Hello I have a ropey structure underneath my right ear which causes episodic pain and a sense of pressure in my ear. It hurts (throbs) if it is palpated with any vigour. I also have swollen lymph nodes, 13 mm adjacent to my submandibular although the gland itself is unremarkable; and two 8 and 9 mm respectively in my parotic gland. Are the two related? Might I have an inflammation of my carotid artery?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The most common causes I can think of about the structure under ear that throbs on pressure and multiple lymph nodes as you have mentioned can be one of the following:
- Chronic abscess
- Sinus formation
- Infected cyst

All such things causing secondary enlargement of the lymph nodes. I would advise you the following:
- Tests of blood for CBC, sugar
- Ultrasound of neck to know the cause, CT or MRI if confirmation or details are to be known
- A course of an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medicines to see the results
Surgery if required

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
