Hello,

Since your dad is catheterized to drain urine, the catheter may irritate the bladder and cause spasms. These spasms may be felt like stomach cramps. The other medical condition that may cause cramps is UTI. Long term catheter use causes UTI. Pain may arise due to malpositioning of the catheter, get the position of the catheter checked. This is to stay on the safer side.

You are suggested to get your dad have urinalysis (R/E and C/S) examination done. If it is UTI he will be treated with antibiotics and analgesic. If the pain is due to irritation than the catheter can be removed after clinical examination for a while and if needed a fresh one can be re- inserted. It can also be due to stress and anxiety since he has just lost his wife. Stress triggers anxiety and acid reflux or gastritis. You can give him antacids and PPI's for relief.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
