Could Citalopram Be Giving Me Negative Pregnancy Tests?

I have been on citalipram for 75 days now and have not had a period in 60 days. All the pregnancy tests I have taken come up negative but I already have a 3 year old and know what to look for. I m exhausted and I sometimes get naseaus and my breast are very sore. This is all how I felt with my daughter. Could my citalopram be giving me negative pregnancy tests?

Hello,

It is not uncommon to get side effects like sexual dysfunction, menstrual imbalance, weight gain(which in turn leads to menstrual irregularities), lethargy and nausea when taking Citalopram.

Most anti-depressants increases serum prolactin levels, the hormone released after childbirth which helps with nursing and briefly pauses menstrual cycle due hormonal suppression from high prolactin.

I would recommend consulting your treating doctor regarding dose or drug change if problems worsen.

The chances of urine HCG negative pregnancy still can not be dismissed in a women of reproductive age group without proper investigations.

I suggest you see your GP and ask for blood beta-HCG levels and serum prolactin levels. These tests will not only help rule out pregnancy, but also help explain missed periods and breast tenderness.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Ayesha Shareef
