Coughing With Vomiting And Sore Throat With Stomach Cramps. What Causes Them?

Hi Dr Samuel My daughter 7 year old, she started coughing with vomiting in betweenlast week, sore throat , stomach cramps , took her to doctor after a week, they gave her antiboitic and cough syrup , she dont have appetite and having a whooping coach always leads her to vomit Confused now, will she improve, what can bring back appetite, also stop this coughing, its like there is mucous stuck in her throat, should i be worried , started antiboitic monday 20 august its now Wednes 22 August only 3days so far Thank you

Hi there.

If the medicines were started on 20th, today makes it the fifth day. If your daughter had a chest infection, it should have been better by now. Most antibiotics show their effect within 48 hours after starting treatment.

However, the cough can take upto 2 weeks to completely get out of the system. If cough is present for more than 2 weeks after initiating treatment, I would suggest you take her to the paediatrician, to rule out other causes of cough like tuberculosis, or cough variant asthma etc.

In the mean time, the best treatment for your daughter would be to give her plenty of warm fluids to drink. (be it water, milk etc). Give her a teaspoon of honey mixed with a pinch of freshly ground pepper 3 times a day. Try to get her to do steam inhalation 3 -4 times a day under supervision.
