Child With Runny Nose, Chapped Lips, Reddish Spots Around The Mouth. What Is Happening?

Hi My 2 1/2 year old daughter started with a very runny mucus nose on Thursday and later that day what looked like she had a chapped area under her nose/lip. It has been 3 days now and she has developed blood red colour spots around the mouth cheek area and today 2 on her neck and 2 on her hand. She has already had chicken pox last year. She seems ok in herself, playing and eating/drinking as normal and no temperature/fever. Not sure what this could be. Can you help please?

Many thanks

Dear User,

The entire evolution of her illness still points to a viral cause. It could be one of the other viruses that afflict men, most commonly, the respiratory viruses, but also, possibly, what are known as enteroviruses. You don't really want the technical names of the viruses.

Just keep the area under the nose and over the chin and cheeks well moisturized, and avoid using harsh soaps. Do not try to "scrub" the spots away, as they might bleed. Just a few more days of patience, and I think your daughter will be out of the woods.
