Child Takes Levetiracetam For Seizures. Now Changing Personality, Emotional. Should Medicine Be Continued?

My grandson started using Levetiracetam for seizures. He hasn't had a seizure since December 2012. His seisures usually happened 2 or 3 hours after he went to sleep or a couples of hours before he woke up. He is 14. We have had him on Carbamazepine - 200mg/tablet 3 tablets/twice a day. We were finding that he had bizzare thoughts against others, he was emotional - not all the time- felt dizzy when he was sitting down, and couldn't explain his feelings but had mentioned he felt weird. he no longer uses Carbamazepine. We now have started him on Levetiracetam - 500 mg/tablet. First started out with .5 tablets twice a day for three days. The 1 full tablet twice a day for 3 days - tomorrow we are suppose to give him 1.5 tablets twice a day. I'm afraid as I noticed yesterday some change in his personally and today he again has had bizzare thought to hurt another child with a knife - he said it was a joke when confronted. I feel in reality he meant to hurt this child but realized at the last moment his actions were not right. I feel that his personality is changing - he had excluded himself for the full day, which is not normal, as he is reasonable engaged with his younger sister and cousin in activities. Today I find that he may be sliding again, seems very tightly wound and can be emotional when we had a chat about his behavior. I have asked if he felt dizzy or different he said no. should we continue with this medication. I feel this medication is alterating his moods, personality and he is agitated sometimes especially when things are not going right. normally he is very helpful and engaged with others. he also has ADD and is taking Biphentin 60mg once a day. are these symptoms noraml. I afraid he will struggle with his classmates if this continues.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, it appears that the drugs he is using showing stimulative effect on the boy. I advise you to consult his neurologist for diagnosis and treatment. Some proteine suppliments, and general drugs may contain central stimulants so you have to avoid such things. Anxiety and tensions should be avoided.Thank you.

Pediatrician Dr. Y V Siva Sankara Murty's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.
I can understand your concern.
I feel your child should be investigated for that abnormal behaviour and seizures. There could be various causes for that. For example raised Intracranial pressure that can occur in hydrocephalus can cause behavioural changes and seizures. So consult your doctor and get your grandson examined.
Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
