Child Has Fever, Headache, Stomach Pain. Diagnosed With Scarlet Fever. What Is Going On?
My child is 5 has been running low grade fever around 100 for almost a week. He complains of headacehe and sometimes says stomach hurts. Has cold like symptoms but have noticed he seems very run down. He is usually very active but has been falling asleep unusually early, seems very distant at times. Not eating normal. He has been diagnosed with Scarlet Fever twice this year (in early fall and again in November). Just a bit concerned. Are there symptoms I should be looking for? I am planning to take him to Pediatrician tomorrow should he be seen sooner.
Hi, Scarlet fever, is a disease caused by a bacteria called group A Streptococcus. The illness can be caught from contact with the sick person because this germ is carried in the mouth and nasal fluids through coughs or sneezes. Scarlet fever begins with a rash that shows up as tiny red bumps. It most often begins on the chest and stomach but can then spread all over the body. The best way to keep from getting sick is to wash your hands often and avoid sharing eating utensils. It is especially important for anyone with a sore throat to wash his hands often and not share eating or drinking utensils. Offer clear liquids such as water to your child often, especially when he has a fever since the body needs a lot of fluid when it is sick with fever. Do not let your child return to daycare or school until he has taken proper treatment.
