Can Seizures Occur Due To Lack Of Sleep?

My sister had three seizures last night with a one minute break between each one. After arriving to the hospital, we learned that her blood pressure was on the low side and still is after being discharged an hour and a half after arriving via ambulance. Blood cultures and a CAT scan were performed with results returning normal. Our family was told that the Grand Mal seizures, (as we were told they were) were from lack of sleep. My sister sleeps normally, if not a few unneeded hours also. There's no way these seizures were from lack of sleep, right? I just think there were more test that should have taken place because these seizures were her first ones she has ever had. Am I over reacting about her situation?

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your sister's symptoms and the work up done so far. I agree with you that more tests should have been done.

It is good to note that CAT scan of brain was normal. However, an MRI brain-epilepsy protocol should be done, as minor abnormalities are often missed on the CAT scan.

In addition, an EEG should also be done.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
