Can Narcotics Be Taken For Pain Relief During Pregnancy?

Hi, I was just wondering I am 4 months pregnant and I have medical conditions that cause chronic pain, so there for I am prescribed narcotics. My OB/GYN says that the medications are class C and should not harm my baby he said that being I am prescribed them for these medical conditions it is fine as long as I dont over do it. I just want to know that my baby is going to be fine as long as I quit taking them a few months before delivery.

Hello
Thank You for contacting HCM.
I read your query carefully,

I would like to ask about the condition that is causing pain.
Because
Medications used in therapeutic doses for acute and chronic pain appear to be relatively safe in pregnancy. To minimize fetal risk, initiate drug interventions at the lowest effective dose.
Only acetaminophen is safest drug of all .
Narcotics should not be used in pregnancy.
>It is not safe.It increases the likelihood a baby will be born small or early, or go through painful drug withdrawal.
>Neonatal abstinence syndrome is a collection of problems suffered by newborns exposed to addictive drugs in the womb.
>Infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome have longer, more complicated birth hospitalizations.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow
up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us.
Wishing you good health.
