Can Delay In Period Be Related To Having Suffered From Flu And Cold?

Today is Wednesday and my period was suppose to come Sunday gone, however I have not received my period as yet. Yes I am sexually active, however I got my period last month December and haven't had sexual intercourse within the 28 days since my period started in December. I have no signs of my period what so ever, however on Monday a small amount of brown blood/discharge was seen and nothing else after. I am a college student and went home for the Christmas break so I switched soaps also perfume. In addition to that I got sick with the flu and was taking multi-symptom tablets and currently at the moment I have the cold, also I returned back to school and there is a huge change in climate compared to that of back home. Can those be a factor to why my cycle is delayed?

Hello ma'am and welcome.

Yes, various factors cam affect the regular menstrual cycle like stress, medication, infections, etc.

So the cause for your irregular period can very well be the infection, physical stress or even the medications that you took to help you recover. Don't worry, your cycle should return to normal soon enough.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Hi,
Thanks for the query.
Delay in periods can occur due to many causes.
Recent illness and intake of antibiotics can affect the hormonal balance and can lead to delay in periods.
Stress and strain, weight changes etc can also affect the menstrual cycle.
Sometimes only scanty flow can be seen during periods.
That is called as hypomenorrhea.
Possibly your cycles may get regularize after hormonal levels become normal.
As there is no possibility of pregnancy, you can wait till next cycle.
If the irregularity continues in next cycle, better to consult gynecologist once and get examined.
If she recommends go for ultrasound and thyroid profile.
Possibly with this workup the cause for your problem can be identified and treated.
Take care.
