Can Cholesterol Level Be Lowered By Stopping Dairy Products?

A recent visit to the doctor showed I had a follicle stimulating hormone level of 145 and cholesterol level of 7.3. I am 55 years old. My mother lived a long life, but had angina from the age of about 60. I thought the cholesterol level sounded a bit high, but the doctor just said to cut down on dairy products, which I do not overdo anyway. I am probably about 5 lbs overweight

If this is your total cholesterol value, this it is definitely high. Cholesterol lowering requires more dietary changes. You don't need to cut down on dairy products especially milk/yoghurt and cottage cheese as they are rich sources of calcium in our diet. You need to cut down on fat present in dairy products like milk cream, butter and ghee. You can safely have about 500 ml of low fat/skimmed milk and curd/cheese made out of it. I hope now you must have understood what he meant. You can include low fat high fibre foods in your daily diet like fresh fruits, vegetables as raw salads without oily dressings, whole grain products like whole wheat/ bran containing foods, oats and oats bran, broken wheat porridge, whole wheat bread instead of their refined counterparts. You can eat plenty of raw salads and leafy green vegetables. Cut down on your intake of saturated fats like butter, margarine, cream, red meat, eggyolk as they increase cholesterol. Use only refined vegetable oil for cooking like canola oil, walnut oil, olive oil, rice bran oil and do not use more than 3-4 tsp of oil for one person in a day. You can consume low fat or defatted soy products also. Stay physically active. Briskwalk for 30-45 minutes a day.

Hope this will guide you in cholesterol management.
