Can Subutex Be Weaned Off During Pregnancy?

Hi, I was RX d Percocet for many years and had trounle with W/D s once I got off, so I went to a subutex Dr. and am only doing it for 30 days to help get me completely done. I am in the process of weaning off and feel great, no problems doing this at all, except I just found out that I am pregnant. They say to stay on it the whole 9 months, I refuse to do that because I was only going to do it for 30 days because I was RX/d my medicine, not gong on the streets, etc...I was wondering if it is possible to wean off while pregnant? I am currently taking 8mg s q am. Thank you

Hello ma'am and welcome.

Subutex needs to be taken during the entire duration of the pregnancy, and cannot be weaned off during pregnancy. Which is why as soon as subutex is initiated in women, their family status, contraceptive history, etc; are all noted to make sure they do not plan on getting pregnant while on the medication. Reason being, that weaning off this medication can result in immediate withdrawal symptoms which can almost immediately result in fetal fatality.

Do not worry about the continuation as it is much much better than discontinuing the medication, you will just have to be monitored to look for any developmental and growth retardation of the baby and nothing more. Your doctor should take care of this, but please do not discontinue the drug.
