Can I Take Tegretol Instead Of Lamictal For Bipolar Disorder ?

I have been taking Lamictal for bipolar disorder for about 3 months, and I developed a rash. My doctor told me to stop taking the Lamictal (the concern being the potential development of toxic epidermal necrosis), and that we would try another drug. In researching the other drugs available I came across Tegretol, which also lists TEN as a possible side effect. Because of my rxn to Lamictal, should I not try Tegretol?

Hello,
Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query.
I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.
If you have developed rash with lamictal then it is possible that you my be having a tendency to have rshes with other medicines as well. In that case it would be wise to chosse options other than carbamazepine ans as such carbamazepine is not the first line drug of choice of bipolar mood disorder. The other better options are valproate, divaloproex or lithium which should be good.
You may discuss with your psychiatrists these option.
Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
