Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I found my brother not breathing. I called 911, but was to scared to do CPR, The paramedics managed to get his heart started but he passed away in the emergency room. The doctor told me that his lungs were full of fluid and that there was nothing I could have done but I feel terrible guilt for not doing CPR. I thought that I could cause more damage as I was not 100 percent sure how to do it properly. He had epilepsy. The doctor asked if I wanted to do an autopsy and I said yes but I forgot to sign the papers before I left the hospital. Would the doctor just say there was nothing I could have done to prevent this so I would not feel guilty or is it the truth. thank you.
Hi welcome to HCM. CPR can certainly help to revive a person if performed timely. There are no serious contraindications to restore the rhythm of the heart. You need not feel guilty in your brother's case since reviving the person in presence of high fluid in the lungs can lead poor outcomes. You have a done a reasonable and possible job to call the 911 for ER service. Please remember that not all cases of CPR will revive a person. The outcome largely depends on the duration and severity of the underlying disease contributing to cardiac arrest.Consult your doctor for further queries. Thank you.
