Can Amlodipine Be Taken For Blood Pressure For A Patient With Osteoporosis?
My mom is 60 years old, had high blood pressure in the 160/100 range previously. Took atenolol 50mg for the last 10 years. Now improved food habits, stress levels, exercise in the last 6 months have resulted in lower blood pressure. So her doctor prescribed amlodipine with atenolol 25mg, instead of atenolol 50mg. Recently, after a bone fracture she was diagnosed with early osteoporosis. She has been taking calcium supplements for the last 3 months. I read online that amlodipine is supposed to reduce calcium in the body, which will worsen my mom's osteoporosis. Do you prescribe amlodipine when your patients have reduced blood pressure and require less medication? Also, is it safe to use amlodipine for blood pressure control when the patient has osteoporosis?

Hello!Thank you for asking on HCM! Regarding you concern I would like to explain you that Amlodipine is safe in patients with osteoporosis. It is shown in different studies that it exerts a trend toward lowering PTH (parathyroid hormone) and osteoclastic activity thus prevention osteoporosis progression.
