Bitten By A Dog, Wounds On Finger. Dog Immunized For Two Years. Does Child Need Vaccination?

Hi Greetings. This is XXXXXX. My son was bitten by a dog leaving tiny wounds yesterday on the index finger . My wife washed the wound immediately. The dog is kept at home but wanders away on its own time and again and was immunized 1 and half years ago. The immunization vaccine was given that would work for 2 years- is it so please ? We have a tendency here to wait for 10 days and then if the dog dies then we take the patient to the dr . does a dog die in 10 days ? Than ks

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi

Usually we say, if the pet animal is vaccinated in the last 1 year period with 2 doses of a potent vaccine in a right schedule- then one may think of observing the dog for 10 days and then decide.

Since Rabies is a deadly disease, its wise not to take chances.

Whatever be the immunization status of the dog, have your kid vaccinated with Rabies vaccine.

The usual schedule is 0, 3, 7, 14, 28 days . The dose on 90th day is optional.

Hope my answer helps you.

Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

If a dog is not vaccinated properly and not upto date in vaccination one should not wait till 10 days.

He should get vaccinated at the earliest possible for rabies.

Rabies is a deadly disease and one should not wait like that.

Hope this helps.
Take care.
