Are The Elevated Liver Enzymes Harmful To Baby During Pregnancy?
Hi, I am 34 weeks pregnant. My SGOT (AST) and SGPT (ALT) levels are 52.4 and 157.5 u/L respectively. Normal range is 5-40 for both. Bilirubin (Total) - Serum is 0.17 mg/dl; normal range: 0.2-1.2 Bilirubin (Indirect) - serum is 0.16 mg/dl; normal range 0.2-1
I understand these parameters are linked to liver. Will this harm my baby's growth in any way?
Your elevated liver enzymes are a marker of liver function and are a symptom of a problem with your liver. The enzymes themselves pose no harm to the baby, however, your doctors should be trying to evaluate why you are having problems with your liver in the first place.
An elevated AST and ALT usually indicate a problem with the function of the individual liver cells, rather than a blockage from a gallstone or other external sources. Diseases like hepatitis and pregnancy complications like preeclampsia can also these lab abnormalities.
So in summary, the baby is not in danger from the liver enzymes, but there is a possibility you could be sick or having early signs of a pregnancy complication. It is important that your doctors evaluate you thoroughly for the reason behind these abnormal values.
I hope that I was able to answer your question and that this information was helpful. Best wishes for the rest of the pregnancy, Dr. Brown
