Are Abdominal Pains, Gas And Nausea Normal After The Nissen Fundoplication Procedure?

I had a nissen fundoplication 1 1/2 years ago/For the past 2-3 months I ahve been getting moderate to severe abdominal pain after eating. I have had almost daily nausea since the surgery. I'm also very gassy and bloat at times. I'm wondering if the pain is something I need to be concerned about, or is it common after this surgery? I am 44, female and weigh 210. I was 250 prior to the surgery. Other the he above, I am in good health except for some hip, joint and back pain

Hi I am Dr Fahim and I will help you with your problem

I have gone through your question. What I comprehend from the available information, the problems you are facing, are the side effects of hissen fundoplication, which are there in about 10% of patients who under went this procedure. Nissen fundoplication enforces the lower esophageal sphincter very well, there are minimal recurrence of the reflux disease but it is assciated with gas bloat syndrome, which makes the belching impossible. So stomach is usually full of air which leads to feeling of fullness, nausea, mild pain abdomen and passage of excessive flatus. These all symptoms are common with nissen fundoplication but ensure little to no recurrence of the disease. Partial fundoplication is the answer to these problems with increase risk of disease recurrence.

I hope my answer will help you and communicate back if you have any further queries. Do rate my answer if you like it.
