Abdominal Pain After Taking Vsl3 Probiotics. Taking Medication For Ulcerative Colitis, IBS. Suggestions?

hello Dr. Grief, I am experiencing severe abdominal pain after being on VSL3 probiotics for only 4 days. I take 2 capsules a day. My Gastroenterologist said I could take both together in the AM. So I did that today, and the pain is worse. Is this normal? Common? What can I do to relieve the pain? I take aciphex once/day and am on prednisione 25mg due to a flare up of my ulcerative colitis and IBS Thank you

Thanks for posting your query on this website. I can fully appreciate your concern for problem.

You have mentioned that you are a known case of Ulcerative Colitis, and taking prednisolone for flare-up. Prednisolone is highly gastric-irritant and should always be taken AFTER meals. If taken empty stomach, it too can cause abdominal pain.

However, the abdominal pain is most likely as a result of the flare-up of ulcerative colitis and NOT due to VSL3. Once the disease is under control, the pain will reduce to minimum/or disappear.

Are you taking Tab Mesalamine along with prednisolone? Mesalamine and related salts keep the disease activity under control.
