What Is The Treatment For Nerve Compression Along The Spine?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Jun 2014
Question: What is the treatment for nerve compression along the spine. From a previous explanation this may be causing pins and needles and extreme lower arm pain only when I sleep. This mainly occurs in the right arm. Only relief is to get up and walk for a couple minutes. Fyi, I feel nothing in my back or neck. Enjoy gardening, landscape, , muscles of course ache, but nothing else. NOTE: I did recently loose my job after 26 years,,, psychological maybe ? I usually work through,,, Just can't sleep through the nite. Getting exhausted.

Brief Answer:
Surgery is the definitive treatment...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

If you indeed have nerve compression then surgery is the definitive treatment. However percentage of recovery and success of treatment cannot be predicted. You will be required to undergo batter of tests and a thorough neurological examination before the doctors put you under the knife. Those that don't require surgery and those who are not fit candidates are managed with medical drugs and physical therapy.

I wrote if you indeed have nerve compression in the beginning, since I am not convinced its nerve compression unless you have scan reports proving it. Your symptoms can be explained by other systemic conditions including anemia, hormone and electrolyte disturbances, vascular changes as well as depressive condition.

If there are no scan reports, I would also order for complete blood counts; blood sugar; thyroid hormone; vitamin b12; vitamin D; calcium and magnesium level estimation along with scan. You should discuss about these with your treating doctor.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarifications.

Regards
