Brief Answer:
yes he should avoid alcohol as far as possible,it can cause many problems

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

I can understand your concern for your husband.

10-12 glass beers per day amounts to almost 1 glass of whiskey.

As he is already known case of hypertension, it is better to avoid alcohol of any type as far as possible.
This much quantity leads to increase chances of high blood pressure, stroke, and other heart-related diseases.
Other significant problems which can occur after long term use of excessive quantity are liver disease, nerve damage, sexual problems, permanent damage to the brain, vitamin B1 deficiency, which can lead to a disorder characterized by amnesia, apathy and disorientation.

If I were his treating doctor, I would recommend to not even drink beer also.

To help you more , I would like to know few things from you.

-How much amount of beer in ml hi drinks per day?

-Since when is he drinking this much beer? And how much alcohol intake in overall life?

-Do you have any reports? Like recent 2D Echo, ultrasound abdomen and liver function tests. If yes please upload the same.

- What is his over all physical condition? And what is his occupation?

Waiting for your reply to help you further.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.

Hello....he drinks 10-12 15oz beers everyday and says that he has been doing that for the last 10 years.....we've been married only one year and I was not aware of this habit of his. He does not exercise, plays golf once a week but rents the cart instead of walking.....his face and neck are very red always and he has a big stomach...his blood pressure was measured recently and came back at 122/88 and his LDL cholesterol at 157 and HDL at 74. His liver function test, GGT, came back at 58
He does have a stressful job, he's a salesman and gets paid commission only and is expected to perform everyday at a high level....
His doctor is not aware of his drinking, and he only sees him once a year to refill his medication..I am very concerned but he refuses to admit that he has a drinking problem and we just fight and he drinks even more, so now I just keep quiet....he's not violent or abusive...oh, one other thing, I found some pills he had hidden, they are called lorazepam, but I don't think he takes them very often as there are only 3 missing
thank you for answering me

Brief Answer:
he should be motivated for deaddiction

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Thanks for info.

10 years is pretty long duration. His LDL is somewhat higher than the normal,HDL is good and GGT is slightly elevated. This suggests possibility of some liver damage. Better to go for ultrasound of abdomen once for evaluation.

Following are the points which are negative in his history and he must get rid of beer drinking.

- Stressful job
- Sedentary lifestyle (not walking enough)
- Big stomach
- already known case of high blood pressure
- Not telling doctor about his habit
- Denial of drinking problem and anger on asking
- Taking lorazepam(sleeping pills ) which acts like alcohol

All above factors favor that he is dependent on alcohol.

His stressful job may be one of the factors for more quantity. This may lead to increase in quantity gradually to cope the stress.

You can inform this situation to his treating doctor without knowing him. Doctor may help you by advising ultrasound and fatty liver will be mostly found. Then he can be inquired about alcohol history by doctor and then counselling for deaddiction done. If he agrees he can be referred to deaddiction specialist for deaddcition and treatment.
He should also be treated for stress management during deaddiction.

Or else you can take help of some family member, relative or friend who can motivate him for deaddiction. You can contact group of alcohol anonymous if it there in your area.

Hope this answer is helpful.
Feel free to discuss further.

take care.
