Brief Answer:
It usually resolves by 1-2 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic.

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history.
It seems from the history that your father is having bleeding in the eye following cataract surgery.
This is called as hyphema and blood usually collects in the anterior chamber of the eye.
This usually occurs in people with fragile blood vessels as in diabetics or in those who are taking anticoagulants.
Since your father is a diabetic and he is on treatment with anticoagulants, this appears to be the most probable reason for bleeding.

Most of the times this will resolve over 1-2 weeks. But during this period treatment with intraocular pressure lowering drugs and steroids to control the inflammation are essential. Rarely if the bleeding is more and if it is not getting resolved then surgical removal may be required.

Please send me more details like time since he has undergone surgery, medications he is using, his vision and other details as mentioned in the examination reports so that I can answer your question more accurately.

Hope this is helpful to you.
Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you

Dear doctor,

I think I was not clear enough in my question.
There is no bleeding now. The eyes were red after removing the bandage next day after surgery. When we asked why it was RED the reply was that while doing surgery there could be bleeding and the REDness in eye will disappear over period of time.

So I was trying to understand why does bleeding happen at time of surgery and how many days it will take for the REDness to disappear.

Doctor has given lots of eye drops along with time intervals at which this needs to be administered. This is the same set of medicines the hospital is giving to all the cataract surgery patients irrespective of whether REDness is present in eye or not.
Attaching copy of those medicines.

Surgery happened on 24th Dec 2014.

Brief Answer:
It is subconjunctival hemorrhage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for the follow up question.

I reviewed your history and saw your prescription.

This is simple subconjunctival hemorrhage and absolutely there is no need to worry.

It will resolve by 1-2 weeks. This occurs because of holding the conjunctiva in clear corneal surgeries and because of incising the conjunctiva in case of scleral incision.

This is commonly seen and there is no need to worry about it.
The eye drops prescribed are correct and your father needs to use them as advised.

Hope this is helpful to you.
Wishing your father a speedy recovery and good health.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Vision will improve once the wound heals.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

The vision will improve as the wound heals and the inflammation of the surgery decreases. This will vary from patient to patient. But final vision will be same.
Since it is only 3-4 days post surgery, this will take time. Once the wound heals the vision will improve. This will take 4 weeks.

Hence no need to worry. Finally spectacles are required to correct astigmatism induced by surgery. This is usually given after 4-6 weeks.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Incision heals by 2-3 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

Please find the answers for your questions below.
1. The chances for retained lens particles with recent advances in cataract surgery like phacoemulsification are less.
These are seen in cases like small non dilating pupil where lens particles are not visible.

2. The micro incision heals by 2-3 weeks. The spectacle prescription is usually done after 4 weeks.

Hope the information is helpful to you.

Thank you

Answered by Dr. Dadapeer K (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
Chances of damage are less.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

The chances of damaging the new lens while trying to remove the retained lens matter is less.
The retained lens matter will be pluffy and it will come out easily by simple aspiration.

Hence the chances of the lens/ intraocular lens being damaged are very less.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Please let know how do we verify if no damage has been caused to the lens.
Can you give the name of tests that can be performed to verify this?

Answered by Dr. Dadapeer K (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
It can be done by slit lamp examination.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

The damage to the intraocular lens can be made out by examining the eye after dilatation of the pupil with slit lamp.
This will provide a magnified image of the intraocular lens and any damage to it can be made out.

Hope this is helpful to you.
