What Does Vaginal Spotting While On Norethindrone Indicate?

Question: I have been on Norethinodrone for about 4 years now, due to my weight. My cycles stopped (as expected) but occasionally I would have spotting (also expected). Over the past 6 months, I have had my full cycle every month. Does this mean I have started ovulating again?

Norethindrone is a progesterone. Norethindrone prevents ovulation. However, it is not as effective as combined estrogen+progesterone pills in.preventing ovulation. Since you are having monthly menstrual cycles now, it is likely that you are ovulating.

Even if you are ovulating, Norethindrone will prevent pregnancy by making cervical mucus thick (thereby preventing sperm from entering uterus) and making uterine lining inhospitable for implantation.

I would also recommend using additional contraceptive measure along with norethindrone like a condom, spermicide jelly etc to prevent pregnancy if combined oral contraceptive pills are not the appropriate choice for you.
