Posted on Wed, 29 Jul 2015
Question: My HD transvaginal sonogram showed I was 6wks 2days, did grow a fetal pole, but detected no heartbeat and yolk sac was dialated. Scheduled for another ultrasound a week later to check for heartbeat. My dr said to prepare for a D & C. I have had two healthy pregnancies, and I am 39 yrs old, but very healthy. What are the chances of having a viable healthy pregnancy?

Brief Answer:
Next scan to check for heart beat will give clear picture.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your query.

I shall make an effort to provide you with good professional recommendations specific to your questions.

With the present finding it is difficult to predict about the chances. Sometimes dilated yolk-sac can indicate the possibility of the miscarriage. But in some cases pregnancy can continue in-spite of dilated yolk-sac. Fetal heart occurs any time after 6 weeks. As scheduled recheck up with scan to check for heart beat will give clear picture.

Yet again, I duly appreciate your query to me, I do hope that you have found something useful to help you and I shall be glad to answer any further apprehensions.

Sincerely,

Is it common or rare not to hear the heartbeat at 6wks & 2days.? I hear a lot of the times it could be anywhere between 6-8weeks.

Brief Answer:
No heart rate and dilated yolk sac, not a good sign

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Heart rate occurs anytime between 6 weeks to 7 weeks, but there is one more finding of dilated yolk sac, which is also not favourable sign, hence the OBG specialist has adviced you like that. So you have to wait for next scan.

Hope you have found something used full.

Regards.
