What Does This Blood Report Indicate?

Posted on Wed, 6 Jan 2016
Question: I'm 46 and my last blood work showed a platelet count of 413. The Dr. did not seem overly worried, but I've had others say I need further tests. I also am anemic. Hemoglobin at 11.7.

Brief Answer:
Yes, the elevated platelet count should be followed up.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

Can you please tell me the entire reading such as was this listed as 413 k/mcl or perhaps 413 per deciliter (dl)? Was it listed as "L" or "Low",on the lab results?

Because if it converts to 413,000/microliter, then this would be within the normal range. Different labs use different notation, so this would be good to know.

Were there any other abnormalities other than a slightly low hemoglobin?

How does this value compare with platelets on previous CBCs?

Do you have any current health problems?

Are you on any medications?

Please provide information to these questions, and I will be able to advise. Thanks.

No medications. No other health issues. About 4 weeks prior I went through a period of extreme stress.
The period of stress was at a peak then. Quite traumatic. Before that period the stress level was running high for a few years. I'm making changes now to lower stress in my life.

Brief Answer:
Please let me know how the result was written on the test.

Detailed Answer:
Please let me know specifically how the result was written on the test. That will give me an idea of how to interpret it (i.e. 413 k/mcl etc).

I attached the blood work but it was flagged as high. The range given was 150-379.
With mine at 413

Brief Answer:
Ok, got it.

Detailed Answer:
So looking at your result, you had 413,000 platelets per microliter.

This is a minimal elevation, and by some lab standards, it isn't considered high. For example, many labs use the range of 150,000 - 450,000 platelets per microliter as normal. Thrombocytosis (excess platelets) is considered to start at 450,000 or more.

So what to do? I suggest rechecking your CBC in 6-8 weeks. But I wouldn't worry about these in the meantime as your test results were not worrisome.

The hemoglobin is on the lower end of normal/borderline. Some women tend to run this way due to menstruation. It doesn't need further evaluation (such as iron studies or search for occult blood loss) or treatment unless there is a downward trend.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification.
