Hi,

Definitely, combined hormonal pills like Althea, are effective in making the periods regular, in whom it is irregular. Normally, 1st pill is to be taken on first day of period and then one tablet daily for total 21 days. After this, give a break of 7 days. Start the next pack on next day of end of break period (8th day of your last pill). During this break period you may have your regular periods. But you are supposed to start the next pack on the prescribed day, irrespective to the onset date and length of period.

However, if you are not sure about your periods, due to irregularity of the cycle, then you may start the first tablet on any day. Normally, a three month course of the cyclic tablets is advised and most of the women, will have their normal cycle after this. However, for few women, a longer course up to 6 months may be needed to make it regular. Even after 6 months of course of these cyclic tablets, if your periods are not regular, then you are advised to see your doctor for further management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
