What Does The Following Ultrasound Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 6 Oct 2015
Question: I am a 35 year old who has had a previous ectopic pregnancy that resulted in the bursting (and subsequent removal) of my right tube. This happened almost 3 years ago. I have recently fallen pregnant, but it appears my HCG levels are not increasing "normally" - 115 on Monday, 129 on Weds. and 140 on Friday. I only have my left tube now and my Dr. wants me to take a methotrexate shot this next Monday. I just want to know if there is ANY possible chance that this is a normal pregnancy and my levels are just increasing slowly in the beginning? An ultrasound shows nothing at this stage. I do have some throbbing in my right side (but I have no remains of a tube there - and my gyno believes it is due to a cyst that burst). I'm torn between taking the shot and potentially saving my left tube if it is ectopic and waiting until we know for sure it is ectopic. Do I have any chance at a normal pregnancy?

Brief Answer:
Chances of a normal pregnancy are very remote.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
HCG levels usually double every 48 hours during an early pregnancy. The rise is even more rapid in early pregnancy. A slowly rising levels are strongly suggestive that the baby is not growing normally. The chances of having a normal pregnancy in the uterus are very remote. There is a high chance- more than 90% of an abnormal pregnancy.
You must save your left tube in order to take a next chance for pregnancy.
It is best to take a methotrexate shot as suggested by your gynecologist. Waiting to make the diagnosis clear will only increase the chances of tube rupture.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
