What Does The Following Creatinine Ratio In A Child Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Mar 2017
Question: Hello.

My daughter is 24 months old. She was born a preemie and currently weighs 20lbs. I took her in to be seen in a clinic yesterday for changes in her diet. She's excessively been drinking water for the past 3 weeks now. She drinks approx. 40 oz of water and 24 oz of milk in a 24 hour period. They took tests and everything came back normal except the bun/creatinine ratio which is 68 H. What does this mean and should I be worried? The doctor didn't seem concerned when I expressed my worry.

Brief Answer:
Please upload all the test reports which are available

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... if the kid is otherwise active and playful you need not worry. Please upload all the test reports which are available with you for me to have a look and get back to you. If possible let me know total amount of urine which she is passing per day in a 24 hour period.

She has about 10 diapers a day. She has been very irratible. Dont know if that has to do with anything.

Brief Answer:
She needs follow up and a check of her blood pressure

Detailed Answer:
Hi...her daily intake of fluid is more than normal. She is consuming more than 100% of her required daily maintenance fluids.

10 diapers per day is high urine output which is correlating with what she is consuming.

To be XXXXXXX there is no consensus on what is the normal BUN abd creatinine ratio for children. But a study conducted in 2010 concluded that - BUN creatinine greater than 60 in children 10 years of age or younger is to be considered abnormal.

I suggest -

1. Have a check of her blood pressure.
2. Follow up her blood tests in another 3 months.
