Posted on Fri, 10 Nov 2017
Question: Hi Dr,
I recently did a routine check up and got some disturbing results. Need your opinion on what to do for remediation.
I went though LFT & KFT with Lipid profile.
I got following result on higher level in Lipid Profile (mg/dL) - Triglycerides - 312, HDL - 23, VLDL - 62.

I got following result on higher level in LFT (U/L) - SGPT/ALT - 61, GGTP - 80.

Please suggest what to do next.

Brief Answer:
Diet and exercise moderation; avoid alcohol if any...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You have deranged lipid values, especially triglyceride values. ALT though high is not concerning; however GGTP is high. If you drink alcohol, GGT values could be related to it. Stoping alcohol will bring it back to normal.

Besides alcohol, your diet and life style plays a key role on how your lipids will look. Good amount of exercise specially cardioexercise plus weight along with dietary changes should help you reduce triglyceride values gradually.

May I know your current weight and height? Maintaining the right weight is also important.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarifications.

Brief Answer:
Weight management..

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Apologies for the late reply.

1. As discussed earlier alcohol plays a role in deranging your lipid values. 2-3 times a month is not very significant however if you involve in binge drinking (for example more then 2-3 serving of alcohol) then it should affect you. I am sure GGT values will reduce gradually as you reduce / quit alcohol.
Besides GGT, alcohol also affects lipid values therefore you should quit alcohol. So it's utmost important that you quit alcohol.

2. Being over weight increases lipid values. Therefore I recommend starting exercise as instructed earlier at the earliest.

3. Non vegetarian diet needs to be moderated. You are allowed to use lean meat which prevent increment in lipid values.

4. Lastly your diet should include plenty of fruits / vegetables. Drinking atleast 8 glass of water is important. Avoid high oil and fat containing food.

Hope this answered your questions.

Regards
