What Does My Lab Test Report Indicate?
Question: Hello Doctor,
My Son is 1.7 years old he had swelling in his face and limbs when we consulted our pediatrician and after couple of test it was confirmed as Nephrotic Syndrome . Today i got the result of Urine test which says
1. Urine Protein Concentration - 387.6 MG/DL
2. Random Urine for Creatinine - 18.mg/dl
3. Urine for Protein Creatinine - 21.53 Ratio
Serum Electrolytes
Sodium (ISE Direct) - 134 mEg/L
POTASSIUM (ISE Direct) 4.3 mEg/L
CHLORIDES(ISE DIRECT) 107 mEg/L
Before showing it to our doctor wanted to know what does the above values indicates
And also please let me know what is the normal Urine Creatinine Level in children of 1.7 years old.
Is Nephrotic Syndrome treatable? is there any danger for Kidneys in Nephrotic Syndrome?
NOTE : Our Pediatric Nephrologist have done few test like Urine Culture, Chest XRAY, and Ultrasound Abdomen scan for which the result will come on Friday(17th March 2017)
After looking at the report our Pediatric Nephrologist its Nephrotic Syndrome with Minimal Changes

Nephrotic syndrome can damage the kidney if left untreated
Detailed Answer:
Nephrotic syndrome means protein in the urine if there is more than 3 grams protein in urine, if left untreated can cause kidney failure . Nephrotic syndrome is common in children and most of these patients respond to steroid treatment over the span of 2 to 3 months but onset of nephrotic syndrome before 2 years of life is slightly difficult to control urinary creatinine excretion. normally will be around 500 milligram per day .
over all the reports of your child show he is suffering from severe nephrotic syndrome and will need regular follow up with nephrologist and treatment. only after 4 weeks we can say that the patient is responding or not
along with medication it is important to decrease the salt intake of the patient , have a fair control over the water intake , medications to reduce swelling can also be used .
you have to be watchful for any fever during therapy.
