Question: my daughter is 10 months old. she was born in 36th week and had viral fever twice in last two months. Her hemoglobin level is 8.9 and platelates count is 201000 , wbc 5600.. Her doctor prescribed her to take more iron rich food and supplement iron drops. Please advice if its ok or need need to be investigated further as her hemoglobin level is very low for infant.

Brief Answer:
It is exaggerated Physiological anaemia

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Greetings of the day

Dear Ms XXXX

Let me reassure you there is nothing to worry. Anaemia is quite common at age of 10-12 months and is also known as Physiological anaemia of Infancy. It occurs due to

1. Hemodilution: The blood volume increases more than the RBC can keep pace, so there is relative fall in Hemoglobin level

2. Diet low in Iron

As peripheral smear report of baby is suggestive of Iron deficiency, it is just exaggerated physiological anaemia of infancy which is substantiated by presence of microcytic (Red blood cells small in size) and hypochromasia (decreased pigmentation of red blood cells). Your doctor has rightly advised, follow it.
