What Does My X-ray Report Indicate?
Question: Hx of lupus , htn ,and hypothyroidism age 50 (never smoked) Been getting progressively sicker over the last 3 days with a uper resp. Infection...sx:easily winded, productive cough (thick yellow sputum), and generalized malaise, afebrile....been on a z-pack since Thursday pm. Went to ER this morning, because above symptoms worsening each day....In ER: chest xray negative but CT scan w/dye shows bibasilar atelectasis. 02 sat=94. I was given dx of bronchitis and sent on my way with augmentin and oral prednisone .
2 questions: why would chest xray be negative??
Is the atelectasis something I should be concerned about??? I feel awful ....

I have gone carefully through your query and have checked the attached reports. I do not think that you should be concerned with the 'bibasilar atelectasis' reported in the CT abdomen. It is important to look at the plates where the exact portion of the lung fields can be seen. The report does not clearly state whether there is consolidation or collapse in those areas. However, it is possible that the respiratory tract infection has led to mucus blocking some branches of the respiratory tree and that could have led to atelectasis in the lung bases. The diagnosis is more or less included in the diagnosis of bronchitis. You need not be concerned unless you have fever. Treatment with Augmentin and prednisolone should clear it off. Also take steam inhalation. It will help in clearing the mucus blocks.
I would insist you to upload the chest X ray report. I can comment accordingly.
