What Does My MRI Scan Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 May 2017
Question: Hi, My name is XXXXXXX I have had two low back surgeries, 1st one was a diskectomy in 2001. I had a re-injury in 2003 while gardening. I have DDD in all lumbar vertebrae. My surgeon on the 2nd. surgery said my bones were soft and one of the screws during the fusion (L5 S1), did not stay in place. I am 62 yrs. old.
I had an MRI in 2008 showed some narrowing at the lower lumbar are. I asked My MD if I could have a bone density test, but he said my bones looked fine in 2008. He told me soft bones means that I have osteoporosis, so just keep taking Calcium & Vit. D. Is there any further treatment that can help reverse osteoporosis? I seem to be having more increased pain than usual in the very low back. Thank you for any input! XXXXXXX Harada

Brief Answer:
Bisphosphonates may be used for osteoporosis.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question and I understand your concern as given your spinal problems addressing osteoporosis is important.

There is further treatment for osteoporosis apart from calcium and vitamin D. Actually the most common class of medication used worldwide for osteoporosis are bisphosphonates. There are several medications in that group, to mention some of the most used ones I would say alendronate, ibandronate or risendronate. They have more or less similar efficacy and safety profile. However it would be advisable to confirm there is osteoporosis with bone density test, if that is not the case they aren't recommended, calcium and vitamin D are fine for prevention.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
