What Does "There Is Heterogeneity/hypodensities In The Thyroid" Mean?

default
Posted on Mon, 17 Nov 2014
Question: I have a CT scan of my cervical spine (Oct. 17) post corpectomy of C-5 and fusion of c-4-6 (Jan.9, 2014) as a result of cervical spondylotic myelopathy. This was ordered because prior x-ray indicated less than 100%fusion. I have not heard spine surgeon opinion of this.
THe CT scan includes the following finding: "There is heterogeneity/hypodensities in the thyroid, if there is strong clinical concern to evaluate for subtle thyroid cysts/nodules a dedicated outpatient elective ultrasound of thyroid may be of further benefit. " What does this mean?

Brief Answer:
Needs further evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Good day,

Noted your concern. This incidental findings of thyroid nodules in CT is called as " incidentaloma". Over the age of 40 years, it is quite common to find nodules in thyroid gland, Adrenal gland etc . When we take a CT scan/ ultrasound scan/MRI scan for some other reasons, these "INCIDENTALOMA"s show up. HAving seen them, now we have to investigate further. Ultrasound scan is the best option for thyroid. Please meet an endocrinologist who can examine your neck. Also, get a thyroid function test ( Free T4 and TSH). This will guide further. Based on the TSH values and clinical examination, we have to proceed further.
Hope this information was helpful.
