What Do These Hematology And Blood Test Results Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Nov 2014
Question: i am 63 years old. I am diabetic and also having blood pressure problem. However due to my disciplined life style and medication under doctor's supervision, both are very much under control. Of course, i had a minor stroke one year back. Currently i am doing fine. Recently i had backache problem and i went to an orthopedic doctor who asked me to do BMD test and many other tests like Lipid profile, HB 1C, TSH, CBC & TSH, RIA, PP Blood Sugar Urine etc. Most of the tests have been found to be normal excepting Hematology, showing MCH 25.6, RDW 15.9 AND PLATELET COUNT 117. I am bit worried due to these 3 tests showing results beyond normal range. I would appreciate to receive some feedback. Regards

Brief Answer:
No issues.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney.
I understand your concern. I appreciate your attitude towards Healthy living.
If your blood sugar is under controlled and your Kidney functions are normal nothing to worry.
Platelet count must be slightly low because you must be taking Anti Platelet medicine like Aspirin for stroke and heart problem you had. So this is actually what we desire!
Now about Low MCV and RDW there is nothing to worry if your Hemoglobin is normal. If your hemoglobin is low and otherwise also you should get an iron profile done including Serum Ferritin.
If that comes out to be low you will be started on iron supplement.
If you have any further query please ask me.
Stay Healthy.
