What Do These Following MRI Findings Indicate?

Posted on Mon, 4 Jul 2016
Question: Hello, Dr. XXXX. I just uploaded the results of my wife's MRI. It is different from her previous problem several years ago on the left knee that had a medial meniscus tear. This case is on the right knee may or may not have been connected to what happened when she got out of her recliner two weeks ago. In any event, what is your impression of the report in relation to surgery? Since the doctor gave her a shot she feels much better when walking although not 100%. Is this type of injury requiring surgery without which the difficulties walking etc. will return? Thank you. PS I don't know why my evaluation shows only 2 stars from last time. I thought I clicked 5 stars. Perhaps the moderator can fix that. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
This injury might need surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case. Your wife is having a flap type of tear which can cause pain and some time locking. She is feeling better by steroid but that is not going to cure this tear. For years like this arthroscopy surgery is needed. If it is not get corrected then it may worsen. I would suggest you following.
1.She should avoid squatting and cross leg sitting.
2. Stairs should be minimum. So is cycling.
3. She should take calcium regularly with vitamin D.
4.If still her pain continues then she should go ahead with meniscus procedure.
Pain in medial and Lateral meniscus can be different so we can not compare it with other knee injury. I hope this answer will be useful for you. Let me know if there is any other follow up questions.
Thanks

Thank you very much Dr. XXXXXXX . My wife may have locked the knee when she simply got up from the recliner from the worsening flap tear. So you mean that really the surgery is unavoidable in her circumstances?

Brief Answer:
Yes if locking is there then she needs surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
if she has locking then it is indication of surgery. Locking means that meniscus flap is big enough for coming in way of joint movements.
thanks
