Question: My daughter had hepatitis b infection 19 years ago at the age of 5. She was given interferon n some antiviral drug. Her hbsc became negative n her viral count went down and she did not require any medication till now. Now her viral count in DNA is increasing n reached 60000. But her SGPT and SGOT counts are normal. Doc is still not starting medicines. Can we start some alternative medicines or natural product in the meantime like liv52hb of Himalaya and milk thistle caps?

Everything normal
Sonography n fibroscan normal
HBV Viral load quantitative 60000

Brief Answer:
Answer given below

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the additional information.

Since the liver enzymes are within normal limits and sonography and fibroscan are normal, she does not require any antivirals or liver supportive medications like Liv 52 or Milk thistle caps.

Only periodic follow up with the Gastroenterologist/Hepatologist should be done.

Regards,
Dr.R.K.

Why can she not take liv52hb which may help to bring down the viral load

Brief Answer:
Liv 52 is not an antiviral medication

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Liv 52 is not an antiviral medication.
It is only a liver protective medication.

There is no concrete scientific evidence to say that it brings down viral load.

I said she does not require it as she does not have any evidence of liver damage.

Dr.R.K.
