Posted on Tue, 6 May 2014
Question: It has been 4 months post normal delivery and I still feel very weak and tired. I also have painful heels if I stand or walk for more than 15 mins at a stretch. Is this normal? My baby is only breastfed.

Brief Answer: No Detailed Answer: Hi I read your query and I understand your concerns. Following is my reply. 1. Feeling so weak is not right. You must not have taken adequate care of yourself during postnatal period after birth of baby. 2. Please get tested for complete blood count to check if you are suffering from anemia or hypoproteinemia. 3. You should continue iron and calcium suppliment tablets during postnatal period also. 4. I therefore suggest please get above test done and show it to a doctor. Meanwhile have healthy balanced diet to improve your nutrition and health. 5. If both heals are painful it could be due to vitamin b12 deficiency. You need to start on vitamin suppliments. Let me know if you have any more questions. Regards Dr. Mahesh Koregol

I took proper rest for 1 month post delivery. I am continuing the calcium and iron tablets. My daily diet includes around 700 ml of milk and curd. One kind of green leaves. One kind of fruit. Oats porridge, ragi porridge. What is the thing which I am missing? Also, what tests have to be done? Only complete blood count is enough? Or have to check for vitamin D, vitamin B12?

Brief Answer: Yes Detailed Answer: Hi Its good to hear you have been talking iron and calcium tablets. It is possible that you might have anemia inspite of these. More over vitamin deficiency seems to be the cause. You can get vit. D and vit. B 12 also tested along with complete blood count. Meanwhile start on vit. B complex supplements. Regards
