Brief Answer: Do not worry. Mostly its normal and goes away. Detailed Answer: Hi, Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns. It is rare and generally temporary to have numbness in one labia alone. The causes : 1) Most commonly its normal especially if it goes away after some days. 2)Nerve damage in the area due to accident ( like due to bicycle seat injury.) 3) Diabetes or multiple sclerosis. 4) Certain drugs like anti epileptics and anti depressants. 5)Herpes 6) low calcium in body 7) Recent vaginal surgery or normal delivery. 8) Recent stroke or seizure or spinal cord injury. 9)Rarely due to cancer of vulva. Now looking at your history in detail i think it is normal and will go away after some time. 1) You had delivery 4 years ago so that is not the cause. When was the hysterectomy ? 2) Did you ride a bicycle recently on a bumpy road ? 3) Did you ever get tested for diabetes. If not then get a random blood sugar test. 4) Your paps are normal and you are too young to have cancer so that is ruled out. 5) Get your calcium levels tested. 6) You do not have history of herpes but did you ever have a stroke or have severe back pain? 7)It can be a side effect of your drugs but then you are taking it for 2 years. I will advise you to get them revised if it is troubling you a lot. Please do let me know the answers so that i have a clearer picture. Also if you can upload a photograph of the area it will be better. Feel free to consult me directly http://bit.ly/drsombiswas Regards Dr. Som Biswas M.D. Mumbai

hysterectomy was 3 yrs ago I have not riden a bike since this started, and it has been a constant numbness for 8 days now. I plan on going to doctor this week and will ask for blood sugar test and calcium test. no back pain but have had acute torticollis twice once in 1999 and again in 2011, it is a neck injury to soft tissue, I still experience pain and my head doesn't sit straight but tilts toward right shoulder. I am also going to get a full exam with std test, as well as yearly pap. could it be that my thyroid meds need to be adjusted? how does one go about being diagnosed with ms?

Brief Answer: Clinical signs, MRI and CSF analysis needed Detailed Answer: Dear XXXXX, With regards to the thyroid medicine, I would suggest you to get your thyroid function test done now to assess the levels. If need be, your treating doctor can adjust the dosage according to your test report. Do not change it as it is. Multiple sclerosis is typically diagnosed based on the presenting signs and symptoms, in combination with supporting medical imaging and laboratory testing. 1) The common signs & symptoms are loss of sensitivity or changes in sensation such as tingling, pins and needles or numbness, muscle weakness, muscle spasms, or difficulty in moving. 2) Difficulties with coordination and balance (ataxia), problems with speech or swallowing, visual problems, feeling tired, acute or chronic pain, and bladder and bowel difficulties are among others. 3) Difficulties thinking and emotional problems such as depression or unstable mood are also common. 3) A MRI brain and brain fluid testing (CSF analysis ) is also needed.
