What Causes Vaginal Bleeding After Taking Emergency Contraceptive Pill?

default
Posted on Fri, 25 Sep 2015
Question: Hi , I have a regular seven day period cycle usually with ovulation pain and mild spotting one week after periods ends. This is my usual regular cycle. My periods started on 9th July and ended on 15th July. My bf and I had unprotected sex without ejaculation on 17th July and I took an emergency contraceptive pill within 3 hours. The next day on 18th we had sex with condom but the condom tore but there was no ejaculation involved both the days. On 23rd July , I got unexpected bleeding for three days that was similar to periods. I waited for more than a month after the three day bleeding and took a hpt thrice on August 29th, different companies. All three tests said negative. I also am experiencing mild cramps for one week that i generally have before periods but no period flow. Do I have chances of being pregnant? What do I do? Why has my period not come? Also i have been on antibiotics and all for throat infection and fever and cough cold during this time for more than a week. Can you please help me out? What do i do?

Brief Answer:
No risk of pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, I understand your anxiety related to the issue.
It is common to have such a bleeding after intake of emergency contraceptive pill.
The bleeding you had in July and this delayed period is all because of the pill and not pregnancy.
It is a common side effect of pill so right now nothing to worry.
Your period will come in a while and there is no risk of pregnancy as pregnancy test is negative.
Pregnancy test comes positive in about 14-16 days post unprotected intercourse if at all that has resulted in pregnancy.
So relax now and just wait for your periods.
Take care in future.

Hello doctor. Thankyou soo much, that did give me a lot of relief. I am worried as it is September 1st and i still havent got my periods. Can i induce it anyway? Or should i take a pregnancy test again? Is there anyway you can suggest that will help induce it? I tried eating papaya once or twice few days ago. Can you suggest what i should do? I am really worried and my mind is thinking of alll stupid situations. How many days late will it come? Cuz the cramps that ive been getting on and off that i generally do before periods , the net says it comes during pregnancy also and is mistaken for periods cramps.. i have no other signs of pregnancy. I generally get these cramps for one week to ten days before my periods start and ive been having it close to 10 days now. But periods hasnt started. Im scared that either my menstrual cycle is completely messed up or it is a pregnancy and tests are negative for some reason. Can you please help and guide me whatto do next? Can i induce my periods? please help.

Brief Answer:
No chance of pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
I totally understand your situation and anxiety but there is nothing to worry and as I told you it is all due to emergency pill intake.
Absolutely no risk of pregnancy if you never indulged in sexual activity after 18th July.
Take tablet norethisterone 5 mg three times a day for 3 days and in leaving the drug you will get your periods in 3-5 days.
And then take proper precautions in next cycle.
In general in patients with regular cycles most fertile days are from day 10 - day 18 of cycle so avoid unprotected sex in this period.
All the best.
