What Causes Tick Bite Like Looking Rash On Face?

Posted on Sat, 9 Aug 2014
Question: My 6 year old niece in San Francisco is in the hospital with 103 fever for last 6 days, sore neck, red almost XXXXXXX tick bite bullet looking rash that stared around her moth, then down her neck and now has about 75 around entire body including palms of hands and feet. They move around throuout the days. She is agitated and occasionally mildly confused or repeats herself. The ruled out meningitis with a spinal tap. All vitals are normal, but she was low in salt.
Spots are irregular in shape, some as big as a nickel, and red with a white skin center. And ideas?

Brief Answer:
Viral exanthematous illness

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic. I am very glad to hear that the spinal tap has ruled out meningitis.

Fever of 6 days with tick bite bullet looking rash starting in face and then spreading into limbs could as well a viral illness associated with an exanthema. The agitation and mild confusion she is experiencing is febrile delirium (irrelevant speech during very high temperature).

Usually rather than fever, what is more important is the activity of the child, in between 2 fever episodes on the same day. If the kid is active and normally behaving when there is no fever, it is probably viral illness. Once viral fever comes it will there for 4-7 days. So do not worry about duration if the kid is active.

If you can upload an image of the rash the kid is having it will be extremely helpful in diagnosis and I will get back to you more precisely.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.
