What Causes Swollen Legs Despite Being On Amlodipine?
Question: HI. I have been on amlodipine besylate for approx 4 years ( also taking triamt/hctz). Recently, my legs became swollen. I was told this amlodipine can cause edema. I was then prescribed valsartan/hctz which caused extreme coughing and rising bp. Then came lisinop/hctz...more coughing and rising bp. Next, Metoprolol. This drug lower my heart rate from mid 60s to 50s and bp still rising. I am very frustrated....any suggestions? XXXXXXX

I appreciate your concern.
You were on Amlodipine ( a calcium channel blocker ) and Triamterene , HCTZ. Peripheral edema is a side effect of Amlodipine.
ACE inhibitors and ARB1 receptor blockers can raise bradykinin levels which lead to severe cough. they however lower BP and don't increase it.
Beta blockers like metoprolol can decrease heart rate , good control is indicated by a heart rate close to 60. If you don't have palpitations, hemodynamic instability or asthma than beta blockers should be continued in a slightly lower dose as they decrease mortality in long term.
AS an alternative, I would advise amlodipine in combination with a HCT diuretic and a beta blocker in consultation with your doctor , based on your failure to tolerate ACE inhibitors or ARB 1 receptor blockers.
I would also advise you to do these tests in consultation with your doctor
