What Causes Swelling Behind The Knee After Physical Exercise?

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Feb 2017
Question: Hi
My husband and I were doing exercises last night that included doing squats and jumping jacks. We did 25 squats and 60 jumping, as well as 20 pushups and 50 crunches. (An exercise I found on Pinterest) anyways, before I went to bed, I noticed that on the back of my legs, behind my knee, I was swelling. Nothing is hard and nothing hurts at all, but its about the size of a small egg and it just looks swollen. Only when I extend my leg. Also, my joints do not hurt and they are not stiff either.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
Noted all the history and understood your concerns.
After exercises as described the appearance of a painless swelling behind the knee, about the size of a small egg and seen on extension of knee joint is most probably due to Morrant Backer's Cyst connected with the knee joint.

Clinical evaluation by an Orthopedic Surgeon and an MRI of the knee joint will confirm this and you would be advised as per the findings.

I hope this answers your query, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

I did cheerleading for 9yrs of my life and my knees will crack and get stiff or pop after I've been sitting for a while.
It's larger on my left leg (back of leg, behind the knee) and there is a much smaller swelling on my right leg in the same spot.

I'm sure that is all it is. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a blood clot and I should be seeking IMMEDIATE health care.

What should I start looking out for in case it is a blood clot?

Thanks :)
