What Causes Stiffness In The Knee Post Bike Riding?

default
Posted on Wed, 26 Oct 2016
Question: I have left knee pain due to injury a few years ago. Usually, I do not have this much pain. Was riding my small bike in the house and felt that something moved and the back of my knee seemed to be stiff. I know I have bone on bone but have not lost the weight to get it fixed. The question most concerned is if I have damaged something? I do not do a lot of walking and have been afraid to go back on the bike as I was afraid it would make it worse. please advise.

Brief Answer:
could be baker's cyst

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
It is not possible to say for sure without an MRI whether or not you damaged something but what you describe sounds very much like you may have developed a baker's cyst behind the knee.
This is when some of the joint fluids gets under pressure and pops out of the joint forming a cyst at the back of the knee. Sometimes you can feel this and sometimes you cannot.
Baker's cysts can be sore but you will just need to see how it goes over the next few days. If you have increasing pain or if the pain does not ease off to some extent then you probably need to see your doctor for an exam.
If it is a Baker's cyst, they can cause some soreness and stiffness but that should ease up in a few days to a week. They often just go away on their own.
Of course there are other possible causes like a tendon or ligament tear. If you knee feels unstable then it would also be good to see your doctor in that case as well.
