What Causes Stiffness And Pain In Neck?

default
Posted on Thu, 27 Nov 2014
Question: I have had stiff neck on and off for several weeks and when I raise my left arm above my head, my neck hurts. It feels like I slept on it wrong as I do sleep on my left side.

The pain is not severe but I have also seemingly had a dull headache also for some time.

Brief Answer:
Spine problems.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Such symptoms are usually present with spine disc problems in cervical area. Due to uneven spine and compression on the nerves which go to the arm your muscles on one side of the neck have to bear too much weight. This causes theirs stiffness and pain. The pain can radiate to the arm, elbow or even hand. Headache is also very characteristic.
Cervical spine problems are usually caused by staying too long in one position (like work in front of the computer) or lifting heavy objects.
I suggest you to consult orthopedist with this issue. Spine MRI should be done to determine if and how advanced is the compression on the spinal cord. Minor changes can be treated with medicines (like Diclophenac) and physical therapy (swimming is a great activity to relax this muscles). Advanced changes might need surgical intervention.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
