What Causes Spotting Post Intake Of Plan B Emergency Contraceptive Pill?

Question: Does plan B cause spotting for women?

My girlfriend and I had intercourse on Feb 15, a day after her period had finished. Unfortunately the condom broke and we decided to get the Plan B one step that same night. A week later she had a mild period that lasted 3 days. She hasnt felt any symptoms of pregnancy and we havent had intercourse since. Now on March 6th, a few days before her originally scheduled period, she experienced a day where she just bled, followed by some cramping and she believes her period is coming soon. Could this be implantation bleeding? Is it a side effect of the pill?

Brief Answer:
No chance of pregnancy. Wait for period.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

1) Sexual intercourse soon after period over is EXTREMELY SAFE in regular cycle and you did sex in SAFE period though condom was broken.

Additionally, she took Plan-B step one, which gives extra protection. In this case, she has NO chance of pregnancy.

2) She got withdrawal bleeding (lasted for 3 days) after a week due to effect of the pill. It is quite normal and physiological phenomena.

3) Abdominal cramp, mild bleeding before period etc may be due to effect of the pill (hormonal imbalance), old blood, endometrial tissue, pelvic infection etc. It mostly indicates she will get her period soon. It is NOT implantation bleeding. Don't be worried much.

Hope, I have answered your query. Practice safe sex in future. Good luck.

It has been about 4 days since what we thought was the implantation bleeding, and the period hasnt started. The cramping also comes and goes. Is this because of a hormonal imbalance?

Brief Answer:
Premenstrual symptoms. Wait another 3-4 days.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Welcome back to HCM,

Thanks for the follow up query.

Period date may alter from 1-7 days due to hormonal imbalance and stress. It is considered as NORMAL thing.

It was safe sex and she has NO chance of pregnancy in this context. Therefore, there is NO question of implantation bleeding. Just be relaxed.

She is getting cramps quite often. It is suggestive of Premenstrual Symptoms, indicate she will get her period soon. I suggest her to await another 3-4 days to get period naturally.

Hope, I have clarified all thing. Good luck and take care.
