What Causes Spotting Inspite Of Being On Mirena Coil?

Posted on Fri, 27 Feb 2015
Question: Hi, I've had a Mirena coil fitted 1.5yrs back due to thick lining and heavy periods. I've had my regular check-ups, pap smear and all has come back normal. My regular scan also shows the Mirena is in the right place. While it has been a dream, I've been bleeding (very > light) over time but i seem to have spots of fresh bloody after sex. It kiils the mood! Can i occasionally take Norethisterone, 5mg to stop it? Is there a risk in taking this X number of times in a year? And is it safe?

Brief Answer:
you can start with norethisterone

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear and thanks for your query.

While with your regular check up you have excluded common reasons of spotting like :
infection
cervical neoplasia ect

you can start to use norethistorone while you have Mirena coil fitted with the dose prescribed from your doctor.

It can be used two to three times per day, for two to three months.

All the best

Ok! So this should be used straight for 2/3 months or when needed? What is cervical neoplasia est?

Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Not two to three months

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear again.

1.Not straight two to three ,but after the spotting will not be present.
2.You can't use it only when you need because you may cause hormonal imbalances.
3.Cervical neopalsia or paraneoplasia are changes that are in cervix ,that are ruled out by doing a PAP smear.

All the best
