Question: I have been spotting some for about 3 months. I am 62. I had a pap smear and it came back normal. Now it is getting worse and red blood instead of brown. I can not get into a nurse practicer until AP 23rd. the doctor at the women's clinic is not taking new patients. Should I wait or try to find a doctor?
Brief Answer:
Post-menopausal bleeding, consult a gynecologist
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to HCM,
At the age of 62, you must have attained menopause.
Bleeding after attainment of menopause is called post-menopausal bleeding and it is an alarming symptom.
The cause of post-menopausal bleeding has to be sought out.
A normal Pap smear rules out cervical lesion/ malignancy for the moment.
However, you need to get few more investigations to know the cause of bleeding.
cancers of the genital tract are common causes of post-menopausal bleeding.
Cancer of uterus, fallopian tube, and ovary have also to be ruled out.
You need to get an ultrasound of the pelvic region.
Further endometrial biopsy may be required.
You need to consult your gynecologist at the earliest to know the cause of post-menopausal bleeding.
If you have more queries, I will be glad to answer.
